Research Areas

Fundamental Symmetries Studies with Neutrons

This group performs experiments with cold neutrons at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL as well as the NIST Center for Neutron Research.

The upcoming ORNL efforts include the Nab and nEDM experiments. The Nab experiment detects protons and electrons from neutron beta decay to study the ‘a’ and ‘b’ correlation parameters and look for new physics beyond the standard model. The nEDM experiments aim to measure the electric dipole moment of the free neutron, whose value will help address the matter/anti-matter asymmetry in the universe.

This group played a leading role in the NPDGamma experiment, which studied the weak force via parity-violation at the Spallation Neutron Source, with results published in 2018. This was followed up with a complementary parity violation experiment to study polarized neutron capture on 3He (as published here). The neutron physics group also plays an important part in the neutron lifetime experiment (BL2) running at the NCNR (see Progress on the BL2 beam measurement of the neutron lifetime). The data taking is going to wrap up in 2022, but we’re leading the effort to construct and run a next-generation neutron lifetime apparatus.

Studies of the Highest Energy Nucleons and Quarks in Nuclei

Our group collaborates with scientists across the US to work on experiments at Jefferson Lab with a 12 GeV electron beam. Dr. Fomin is the PI on two upcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab to study short-range nuclear behavior that gives rise to high-momentum nucleons as well as search for the impetus of the EMC effect (modifications of quark distributions by the nuclear environment). Funding for a graduate student is available on either of these projects.

Teaching

Dr. Fomin has taught the following courses:
